that's what I love about it! man people take fake things so serious like this was a documentary or something. it's a set. duh. c'mon. I think it's great!
i usually love anja and i think she looks awful here!
i am also offended by vogue italia, the magazine that had the "all black issue" showing a photo editorial where the maid is, of course, black. although i am white, i find that incredibly hypocritical and demeaning. i think that the fashion world really does lack ethnicity. it reminds me of a post on jezebel.com talking about how catalogues such as free people, use foreign people of an ethnic background as "props" and "backgrounds" for the models.
maybe the maid could have been cast as an elderly white lady if they were going to make the rest of the story so "white". i mean to use a black woman only as a maid is bad to begin with, but especially so in an editorial where the woman and children are all light skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes.
i can honestly say that i think this editorial blows.
I agree with you. While it is only one photograph, that very fact makes one wonder if it is even necessary. That kind of makes it even more of a slap in the face. If the rest of the editorial can do without color, why was it necessary for that photo? Why was it necessary that she be ethnic?
I feel bad that that one kid kept cying in all of his photos. (Was he that miserable, or were they making him cry for the purpose of the pictures???) I hope he peed on her dress in the diaper-less shot.
And I have mixed feelings about the picture with the maid. Since there is only one photo with a maid/someone other than the mother and her children, it's difficult to tell what the photographer was going for in including it. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that it was meant to be a commentary on the disparity between race and socioeconomic conditions. Otherwise, it's kind of thoughtless (to say the least) if he wants us all to happily accept the assumption that a white family in a retro photo shoot would only hire a person of color as staff.
But setting my criticsms aside, I kinda like some of these photos. The model does a good job conveying boredom/apathy (the one where she was smiling was especially good as she made it seem so insincere), and it definitely makes me not want to be a part of this family/live this lifestyle. Which I think is what the photographer was going for?
Some of the dresses are stunning (I've seen Dita von Teese in the blue one! It looked better on her.) but I don't like the shoot and the way it was executed.
Perhaps it was not meant to be offensive, but as a person of color, I can say that I did find it slightly offensive. I don't get offended very easily at all but it's kind of like someone else said, you don't see much ethnicity in fashion in the first place. Which feels weird. Then to see something like this, it kind of smacks of "There ARE people like you in fashion.. in the background.. playing a subservient role..."
I love the clothes, hate the one with the black maid and think it's all sort of sad (which I suppose is the point). But damn, I'd be upset if I was that black model.
Why would the model be upset? She took the job, after all. The "I don't know nothin bout birthin no babies" actress in Gone With the Wind took a job, every fat actor who had roles in movies/TV to play the fat one who's always eating accepted those roles, everyone who's turned some part of their identity into a caricature for money... well, could they really have been that upset?
hm,well, now I got it.. but Rubik is not the right person to play this role) it would be fun to do smth like that with party-girl Agyness Deyn and put on some crazy outfit. and babies hahaha))
Vogue italia has incessantly reinforced their stance on the white upper crust floating so angelically over the dark side. Slaps in the face left and right from this mag, who sets the proverbial stereotypical stage for the rest of the world to (Very sadly) follow mindlessly like lemmings over the cliff.
this one in particular was halfway decent though at first glance. the over glamourous lifestyle of the lush and luxurious that spares not one second for anyone without powerful connections, money, pool of extravagant wardrobe or a private jet, or in other words, a baby; still managed to display this in a beautiful way. (id feel bad for the kid if he were actually being treated like this in real life) but then i scrolled down to the pic in question and stopped dead in my tracks. i wont get off subj and talk about the 'all black' issue of vogue ((which was really just separate but equal bullshit with ALL the front campaigns white girls and only the eds with black ones) but im really at my wits end with them. i mean, they couldnt have just used a disheveled teenager, or as usferalkids said, an elderly white woman? wtf vogue?! slavery is over incase you havent noticed, the reminders can stop!
shock value, yes, cancelled subscription and as much lambasting as humanly possible.
totally with you. an elderly white woman or a homely teenager being ignored by the careless, glamourous woman would have had the socioeconomic message that the magazine is supposedly going for. they chose to use a woman of color knowing that this is a very fucked up, very painful part of history for a lot people no matter what color they are. this IS about race, this IS about racism and anyone who pretends it's not is just a part of the problem.
Hahaha, oh man, I love it. She personifies how I feel about (me, myself) parenting. Except I'd have way less money/way less fancy clothes/GOOD GOD THAT COUCH IS BEAUTIFUL (so I hope I'd have that!).
In re: the imagery and questions of ethics/racism... I think it's pretty clear that this photoshoot is meant to be set in the 1950s/60s, with the stereotype of the heavily drinking socialite white mother, cherubic children, and a black maid. I'm sure they thought it was some kind of brilliant commentary... what that commentary is supposed to say, I'm not quite sure. I have a feeling it's all meant to be terribly ironic and tragic and oh-so-beautiful.
Those kids are so fucking cute. I really love the photo of her and him on opposite ends of the couch.
That said, I really don't like the theme, mostly because it reminds me of way too many up-their-own-ass WASP families I know where the mothers spend a shitload of money on their hair and their interior decorators and their kids' private high schools but probably can't remember the last time they had a conversation with their child that was more than 10 seconds long. /rant

I don't think the maid picture was meant to be offensive, this whole shoot seems like it's supposed to be one big social commentary.
