I will have to go into town and pick this up and ask around which maiko these are. I have never seen them before, but then I pay more attention to geiko than maiko. :D
On one hand I flinch at maiko being used as decoration but on the other it is a fashion spread and I do think it looks pretty. Thank you for sharing!
I agree with the sentiment that this portrayal of Japan is highly inaccurate– the population is not composed of maiko and businessmen, and Japanese-style rooms are also rather uncommon nowadays. But artistically, this shoot is stellar. I like the reoccurrence of the maiko in each photograph, especially in the eighth as a subtle reflection, and the model's wardrobe is wonderfully unusual.
I hate this photoshoot. I agree with everyone who said that its awkward, almost hard to look at.
But I LOVE the maiko. I confess that it is the only reason that I looked at this spread.
I think I would have liked this better if the model was more male-like/androgynous or if the clothes were more kimono-esque, and she fit in with the maiko.
yep, the maiko make her look like shit....like models posing with ballerinas creates a similar effect. Would have been more cool with male butoh dancers or something.
First of all, please, excuse my english. I´m not too sure about it.
Though not perfect, i think it´s a good editorial. Great location, compositions, light, style and fashion. It suggests a diplomacy environment to me... I find very interesting the color treatment, too, with this retro and cool effect, and the softness of the light.
Anyone knows if Anastasia is daughter of photographer Giampaolo Barbieri?
The model herself is pretty dull, but I do think her clothes fit in well, maybe because they have an emphasis on drapery and voluminous flow kind of similar to the kimono.
We need more Carmen, but whenever she does make an appearance, it's worth it. i love the lush felling these have, as well as the drama that Japanese architectural design lends to it.
i really hate it when they do shoots like this: they put a model in front of some exotic foreign (as in non western) people and that's it. This is not one of the worst, the ones with people from the third world just disgust me, like they are some sort of curious objects on display and particularly because of the contrast with the luxury models usually exhibit.

Maiko, geiko, and ballerinas always trump models
when will editors figure this out? These women were trained to suck the air out of rooms and they do. Just stop it.November 15 2008, 01:22:45 UTC 3 years ago
