Pictures aside, it's pretty sad that there are so few black models that they warrant a special issue.

that's for sure

My favorite is Chanel's, it is so edgy and it really shows that black models are high fashion.

Yasmin and Chanel's shoots have gotta be homages to Grace Jones.
A woman who perfectly exemplifies the hard, fierce edge of the 80s.

I'm sorry for the lack of importance for this post, but I love your icon. Who is she? D: <3

They made a "black" issue? WOW. Just wow...

[info]simplylovely1

July 10 2008, 16:54:00 UTC 3 years ago

Sadly Yes, but some type of change needed to be done. It Would not have been that Controversal if black models had already gotten equal opportunities in the fashion world, but looking at how most (not all) of the pictures turned out I would have to say I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.

I am going to have to pick up this monumental edition!

i hate to be devil's advocate, but i wish they had gotten some more variety and used more ethnic looking models. most of these models are very light-skinned with small, delicate (i.e. white) features. glad to see they used Tocarra, though. she is gorgeous.
anyway, a lot of these came out very lovely.

I know what you mean.

[info]vandring

July 10 2008, 18:01:22 UTC 3 years ago

As lovely as some of these are, it's basically segregation all over again to make a special issue that only features black models. A better alternative is to, y'know, regularly feature black models.

[info]randomneses

July 10 2008, 18:07:43 UTC 3 years ago Edited:  July 10 2008, 18:09:06 UTC

Segregation is a loaded word. It's not so much segregation as making up for the lack of black models in the industry and dedicating an issue to them. I'd rather have that at the moment than having to search through the magazine for a picture of one black model and meant to be satisfied by it. That's one of the reasons why magazines like Ebony and Essence exist but they're also around because certain sections cater to aspects of black women that regular magazines don't, especially hair sections.

OH AND WTF, CHANEL IS IN THIS?

I keep getting shocked at seeing her in this stuff. She was one of my best friends when I was in elementary school. I still think it's funny that she uses Iman as her last name though because it totally isn't.

[info]simplylovely1

July 10 2008, 18:26:55 UTC 3 years ago

Really? What is her last name if you don't mind me asking?

And Toccara!!! O_O

July 10 2008, 19:10:01 UTC 3 years ago

There's some gorgeous photography here, especially the Grace Jones homage. I do wish there were some more shoots/shots with natural hairstyles/hair.

July 10 2008, 19:20:01 UTC 3 years ago

Yes I agree!

[info]empiredownx

July 10 2008, 19:51:33 UTC 3 years ago

Toccara actually looks great here. It's very weird seeing her in this context, but nice. I think hers, Chanel's, and Yasmin's are my favorite sets. The Grace Jones homage is great...the only thing better would Grace actually in the issue.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
oh tyra
MODEl
mogul

what's the fucking difference?

I love tocarra's, she is looking fierce although I wonder, if she gets an ed why not liya or alek? They are like THE black models to me.

[info]notacloud

July 10 2008, 22:09:00 UTC 3 years ago

i love this so much. but i would like it better if Tyra Banks were not present. ugh. i wish there was one picture that said "Model" one that said "Mogul" and a third that said "ME ME ME ME ME ME!!!!"

July 11 2008, 05:29:13 UTC 3 years ago

epic in every way.

these women are beautiful. just exquisite. each and every one. this issue is historic and I hope it has effect.

and as for Sessilee Lopez: A FUCKING STAR IS BORN. My god. Is anyone with me on this?

AHHH Toccara. Good for her.

Chanel looks great too, I wish they called in the actual Grace Jones as well.

I really need to buy this.

[info]_alldeliberate

July 12 2008, 02:41:38 UTC 3 years ago

I definitely loves Sessilee's. Her photos and the one of Jourdan smiling were my favorites.

"BlacK issue"? Is it african american or any model that has dark skin?

[info]dahir_sunat

July 11 2008, 22:47:42 UTC 3 years ago

Many of these models are from Africa... So no...
I`m a bit surprised by how many Somalian models there are..
Ubah,Iman, Yasmin.. And one Sudanese.. and so on..

*double take*

Toccara?!

Whoa, unexpected. I can't really take her seriously since she's ex-ANTM. I love antm but I find it hard to consider the contestants as real models (except most of the winners and a few other good ones.)

July 12 2008, 15:40:54 UTC 3 years ago

Ah, for fuck's sake. You know it's sad when it gets to the point where they need a special Black issue to showcase Black models. I mean, the photos are absolutely BEAUTIFUL, but geez. Is it really that hard show variety in regular issues?

I wish the fashion industry would wake up. There are dozens of gorgeous Black models out there who are just as talented and high fashion as anyone else. I wish they would stop being little cunts about it.

[info]sincerely_jane

July 13 2008, 04:05:45 UTC 3 years ago

if only they were shown through the regular pages. god, black women are SO beautiful.

[info]unefemme14

July 21 2008, 17:05:53 UTC 3 years ago

When they use the term black issue do they mean African American or models with dark skin. Because if this is the black issue meaning African American issue why is Sessilee Lopez featured in this. She isn't African American she simply has dark skin.

[info]velleitas

July 22 2008, 00:25:38 UTC 3 years ago

Americans aren't the only people classified as African. Lots of South Americans have some African heritage and I see some Brits in this issue (Naomi, for example, is not African-American, she is British, as is Jourdan Dunn, etc) and some Africans as well. I think they mean black, as in African, regardless of of where they live.
